How do I brush my dog's teeth?

My dog is about 2 and a half. he weighs ten pounds and is really tiny, however he hates having his teeth brushed, but it is becoming quite necessary because he is developing infections of sorts and his gums are rotting or something...I feel so bad for him, but ever since he was a puppy he would simply not allow me to get a toothbrush with toothpaste near him...he runs away, hides, bites, growls, until finally i just give up...what is the best way to go about this and ease him into the process? How do I brush my dog's teeth?
I'd say just take him to the vet or groomers and have his teeth professionally cleaned, it will take care of the infections and it has to be dome much less often if you have it done professionally. Also, try changing his dog food, and dont feed him wet food, as it just encourages tooth decay. They also make dental bones for this purpose. However, do not ignore the problem of brushing like a previous poster said. If teeth are left to rot, it can be very painful for you dog, and a big time vet bill down the road! If infections get into the blood stream from being untreated it can kill your dog.How do I brush my dog's teeth?
well there are bones with bristles that you can put flavored dog toothbrush on it, go ask your local petco or petsmart see if they have it
